Defense Department Report Finds Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in question contained particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The report did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Potential Threat to Troops

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the report also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The source said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and considered the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released later this week.
